As a federal judge in Phoenix listened to request to block Arizona’s new immigration law the web was abuzz with more news of the infamous list of allegedly undocumented persons living in Utah. The list which was released to the Law enforcement agencies back in April 2010 contains 1,300 names, birthdates, social security numbers, addresses, due dates of pregnant women, and other information. It comes from an “anonymous Anti-immigration group” cover letter here which states it released the list to the media due to inaction by law enforcement. According to Tony Yapias of Proyecto Latino de Utah, the list seems to have originated from the department of Workforce services. There appears to be support for his suspicions as two employees of the department have been placed on administrative leave; a formal investigation begins on Monday July 19 th .
Judge Bolton will hear the case brought by the justice department on the law next week. Nine state attorneys general have sent “friend of the court” briefs supporting the Arizona measure. The states are Michagin, Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and Virginia. Text of the bill here

Top-level comments on this article: (5 total)So you believe in open borders? You want to let in anyone who wants to enter the U.S.? Would you feel this way about your house? I'm proud of the fact that my state is supporting Arizona's measure.Hi Terry thanks for reading and commenting. I think it is clear we disagree here. To your string of irrelevant questions I would say I brought my house. I didn't poison the people who lived there before me and then pretend they had no rights to it. I have served 8 years in the military honorably as well.Too many people who just happen to be born here think that entitles them to oppress or harass others. I disagree. I think we need to teach history more accurately in our schools. Stop acting as if Legal is equivalent to Just and find some solutions to the problems we face in today's world.Again thanks for reading and I think all perspectives will have to come together if we ever solve anything.Okay James, what would be your solution to our border problem? Speaking of those "who just happen to be born here", let's s say, for example, that you just happened to be born in a rich family's house and someone else just happens to be born in poor family's house. If that other person wants to move into your house and/or argue that they have just as much right to it as you do, do you have to let them do so. Remember, you did not buy the house, you happened to be an offspring of the rich owner.Maybe people who hate illegal immigrants should get together and go down to Arizona and really make a difference instead of just talking about it. Be real men, not just complainers. Scoop up a few old Nannies or house maids and drive them to the border and dump them out. You'll feel good about yourself.I don't see where anyone says they hate illegal immigrants.Once again you are speaking of houses which to me aren't relevant to this discussion. I don't accept the premise of a state or country being the same thing as a personal domicile. I will discuss this situation with you at face value though if you wish. But your analogy for me doesn't hold water.I think where you and I differ is the thought because something is established as a law it is correct. I think the purpose for which many of our laws where created are horrible. I think we have to revisit and correct issues as we become aware of them. I think the mindset of "I was born into what I was born into and screw the rest" is a cop-out at best and criminal in the worst instances.I don't know what part of Va you are in but I grew up in Chesapeake and I know there are many in my hometown that share (what I know of) your view. One of my colleagues here at the college I work thinks about things in a similar way. I know my way isn't the only way to look at things and I talk to a lot of people about a lot of issues.I am passionate about how I feel though and have a hard time understanding how people can blindly bind to ideals and beliefs without exploring them and other ways of thinking. Your houses analogy does make me think about my volunteering and giving and I guess I could do more. I do what I do, I feel fulfilled in my work and I volunteer with different organizations. My solution to our border issue, (for me it isn't a problem and I live a lot closer to any international border than anyone in Virginia) is to realize the constructs that we have accepted are largely bogus. People are people and the bogey man and job stealing immigrant are largely a figure of the imagination. I would say that most wealth that has been acquired in this country was done so by largely immoral and earth damaging means and we need to realign our value system. People need to stop blaming and fearing one another and work together for our common good. Meaning a sustainable, ecosystem, economy, and standard of living. To be honest if people would stop talking about forefathers and provide their current individual contributions to the world we would live in a much better place. I think people would have a much healthier sense of ownership in their communities then as well.
To be honest I am glad this article is getting so many views and I just hope people are talking and sharing ideas.Beautifully spoken.Excellently said - to JamesObviously, James, we both have strong opinions on this issue and will have to agree to disagree. However, I think you are misunderstanding me is regard to your statement: "I think where you and I differ is the thought because something is established as a law it is correct." Actually, there are lots of laws I completely disagree with. However, out respect for the rule of law, I obey them anyway. We would have a truly chaotic society if people only had to obey the laws they agreed with, wouldn't we?I would say that would depend on whether you think people are basically good or basically evil. I tend to think they are basically good. Unfortunately I don't feel the same way about our laws. I wish more people were interested in our creation and implementation process of laws in this nation. I am sure I don't understand your view completely as I really don't know you and haven't read a lot of your writings. I am sure their will be many discussions on this to come. Thanks for sharing and commenting Terry.
This has become a hot topic here in the Tampa Bay region of Florida. Many of the November political ads are already appearing with those who are pro an con of bringing the same style laws to Florida. Thank you for putting a link to the text of the bill as I really needed to take the time to read the bill and understand it for our own elections. In premise I totally disagree but would still find it prudent to read the bill before stating an opinion. Thanks again.Thank you for reading and commenting Reverend Goddard. I know I read through it and can make sense of it but I think it is unfortunate our country's legislation is written in such a way that it could really be applied or not applied in a myriad of ways. I can honestly say I don't envy our law makers. We have a very cluttered system.
That cover letter is absolutely terrifying. This harkens back to Nazi Germany. I believe in open borders and compassion for people who have less than I do or who come from countries where they can't make a life for themselves.America is the wealthiest country in the world, and some of its people are the meanest and least secure within themselves. My Dad used to say "there but for the grace of God go I". The people who signed that terrible letter would do well to think on it too. This is so upsetting. Thanks for writing about it. Xenophobia is happening in South Africa as well, and it's just about people needing an outlet for their own unprocessed emotions, looking for scapegoats.Sorry to hear this is going on in South Africa as well.
The world is full of hate, imagine if we were the size of Jupiter, how many Neo Nazi politicians would we have? Would we be able to afford the luxury of having more people like Jason Ready, "J.T.", who feels that the new bill is too weak. Imagine more of him and his fascist buddies roaming the desert looking for people from Mexico. I wonder what's next, will these politicians like J.T. and Jan Brewer form allies with other countries to have the "brown skins" deported. I ask them again "what can brown do for you"? LOLThanks for reading and commenting Rose-Marie.
Call me criminal, call me illegal, call me WET BACK if you want, but while you are at it also call me the person who literally puts all those vegetables and thousands of other cheap products on your table. Unless somebody has a better idea on how to fill all of those hard, back braking, and enslaved jobs the state of Arizona and supporters have to understand that we are not here to steel, murder, terrorize, pollute, or endanger the National security. We only want to feed our family, get an education, and hopefully have a better future just like most of the grandfathers, great-grandfathers, and previous immigrant generations of the now “Americans.” By the way if I recall the only true “Americans” are the actual Native Americans, therefore, this is probably and most likely an act of hate and discrimination. My biggest concern is why Arizona’s law is intentionally manipulated to persecute those who fit the description of Mexicans, Latinos, or simply “Brown”? I thought that also there are other immigrants who come from a mostly white populated country? It just does not make any senseHey Camacho....haven't seen you before. I will be checking for your articles. Thanks for reading, commenting, and adding your perspective. If Republicans don't have someone to demonize, they have nothing that appeals to their base. They come up with a new boogeyman every election cycle.
