While reports abound about when the oil from the horizon oil spill will reach the loop current and Gulf Stream very little has been said about the toll this spill has already taken on wildlife in the immediate area. Little or no press has been given to the dead dolphins that have washed up on the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. As of May 18, 2010 there were 162 sea turtle standings in May which represents a 300% increase to the number last May according to a Times-Picayune article.
One site I have found for decent information on the effect this spill is having on wildlife is Oiled Wildlife Care Network blog. Here you can get up to date info on the animals this organization is attempting to rehabilitate as well as volunteer info.
Another under reported situation is the use of disbursements to keep oil off the surface of the water. It seems to me that by creating underwater mountains of oil these disbursements are both misnamed and create an even larger problem. I have yet to find any information on how this process betters the situation other than making the situation appear less damaging on the surface and to satellites.
Lastly, how much oil is this well actually spraying into the ocean? Estimates range from 5,000 barrels a day to 25,000 barrels a day. I can only account for this huge range by looking at who is citing the numbers and how they are invested in this situation. For an idea of what a barrel of oil means to a consumer check Geek O System. As of May 21, 2010 I have been unable to find what the effect of a barrel of oil is on sea life.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)I worked for Shell Oil at one time. ALL oil is dirty, greedy and will be the eventual downfall of mankind, environmentally, economically, and more importantly, nuclear - like in "bombs." .I believe you. Money is a powerful drug and can cloud all kinds of peoples decisions. Wealth is money concentrate and there is a lot of wealth built around oil.Until we as consumers change our habits this is unlikely to change. You are very right there Sawyer and I am as guilty as any.
